Use Of Escapes

I'm trying to understand how to use escapes with a2ps (section 3.2 of the user 
guide). 
In section 3.2.3 (page 24),  '\f'  is listed as triggering a form feed (new 
page) by a2ps
however when I place that in the a2ps input it is printed as part of the 
output.  Same 
thing with '$n" for input file name. 

Do escapes need to be incorporated into a style sheet?
