Another x-symbol user, welcome. :-D

I know the problem you are taking about. Although UTF8 is now standard
and should just work without problems, I have still encountered problems
when interchanging Spanish latex documents with my colleagues who use a
different OS, most often windows. So I agree 7-bit is the safest way and
x-symbol is the most comfortable solution for this, [1]

May I suggest to give Xemacs a try. X-symbol is a package which has been
written for Xemacs and then ported for GNU emacs, and as you said this
fails for newer versions of GNU emacs. The maintainer left 12 years ago,


In any case x-symbol works flawlessly in Xemacs 21.4 mule or non mule.
It also works in 21.5.33 which has better UTF8 support, but if you are
on a Mac you must compile it for you self, which I have no experience,
since I am on linux.

And yes auctex 11.88 also works in Xemacs ..
