[AUCTeX] Amsmath

Hi everyone,

I wonder whether someone can help me with an issue with
amsmath and auctex.

When I open a .tex file, I'd like auctex to enhance the
amslatex environments and commands - like gather, align,
matrix, etc.

The situation until a couple of weeks ago:

Until a couple of weeks ago I used emacs 21.3 and auctex
11.14, installed on a windows xp. Then the ams features
were the default. In my .emacs file I had the lines

 (setq TeX-parse-self t)

 (autoload 'amsmath-mode     "amsmath")
 (add-hook 'LaTeX-mode-hook  'amsmath-mode)

and in my .tex documents the package amsmath was explicitly
loaded. Indeed each xxx.tex file had an associated
xxx.el file in the local auto/ directory, with "amsmath"
under "TeX-run-style-hooks".


The situation now:

A couple of weeks ago I installed the precompiled emacs
22.0.50.1 + auctex 11.82 for ms windows, downloaded from the
auctex homepage. Everything (except an issue with
bibtex.el - more on a short PS below) works fine
- the preview-latex, math-mode, etc. Buth the ams features
are not loaded, not even if I give the "C-c C-n" or "C-u C-c
C-n" reset commands. Here are some things I've noticed -
hope they are relevant somehow:

1 - auctex.el is in the site-start.d directory, as it
should, and is in fact loaded. amsmath.el (and .elc) is in
the emacs/site-lisp/auctex/style/ directory.

2 - My .emacs file has the lines

3 - If the lines
 
 (autoload 'amsmath-mode     "amsmath")
 (add-hook 'LaTeX-mode-hook  'amsmath-mode)

are included, then I get (in the Messages buffer) the
errors:

 File mode specification error: (file-error "Cannot open
load file" "amsmath") 

 File local-variables error: (file-error "Cannot open load
file" "amsmath")

and moreover preview-latex is not loaded (why?). In any
case, the ams features are NOT loaded.

4 - If the lines
 (autoload 'amsmath-mode     "amsmath")
 (add-hook 'LaTeX-mode-hook  'amsmath-mode)
are commented away, instead, then I get no error messages
and preview-latex is loaded and works fine, but the ams
features are still NOT loaded.

5 - Both with the two "amsmath-mode lines" or without them
(see 3 and 4 above), the "C-c C-n" and "C-u C-c C-n"
commands in a buffer xxx.tex with the amsmath package
do create the respective xxx.el file in the local auto/
directory, and this file DOES have the call to the
"amsmath" style under "TeX-run-style-hooks".

6 - I check whether the ams features are loaded or not by
looking at the commands available in the "LaTeX/Insert
Environment" menu and by issuing a "C-c C-e" (insert
environment) command and seeing if the TAB tries to
complete "al" to "align".


I attach my .emacs file and the information gathered from
"TeX-submit-bug-report" below.

Hope someone of you can help me or at least give some
hints. Thank you in advance anyway!
