This is what Carsten said to me when I enquired. As I understoood, this means I have to unzip the reftex somewhere into the load path of windows and not into the xemacspackages directory?

I used the following file to install Xemacs http://www.xemacs.org/Download/win32/#InnoSetup-Download  Is this what you call as SUMO?

I couldnt install even AUCTeX using the package manager of XEmacs, I had to download it from the AUCTeX site and unzip into the xemacspackages directory.

Maybe I am not doing something right about installing through the package manager?

The reftex distribution is not an xemacs package, so fo now you need to
follow the installation instructuions as they are in the reftex
documentation.  That means just installing somewhere on your load path - I am
not sure if unpacking in the pachage tree would work.

That would be news to me.  RefTeX has been part of the XEmacs "sumo
package" for eternities.  If you don't install Sumo (well, at least
you would probably not want the AUCTeX coming with Sumo, but it should
be easy to deinstall it using the package manager), you can still use
the package manager of XEmacs to install RefTeX.

Activating it is a different procedure and described in its info
manual.
