Referencing in RefTeX is done with `C-c )' and once you typed that you are asked for a label type. In the selection buffer you can then switch to a varioref or fancyref style by typing `v' or `V' respectively. The latter is not controllable by a style file.I was just asking for a suggestion of a good keybinding for this macro. Now that you point out that feature, I see that the "right thing" would be to fix RefTeX to allow the choice of autoref with v/V. But that's a bit more difficult.
Actually, I see that someone has patched an old version of RefTeX to do this at <http://www-i6.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/~dreuw/reftex-hyperref-autoref.php>.
