Follow-up Comment #2, patch #7973 (project autoconf-archive):

Good catch. But the macro already has too many PTHREAD_CC="$CC"s in there as
it is; the bug is the result of trying to catch all the corner cases
individually, and failing.

I'm attaching a somewhat heavier fix (alt-fix-7973.patch) that addresses the
problem by simplifying the code. Could the original submitter give it a try?
