I do have a few comments to make, but I think it would be much easier
for us to discuss about autolib if you knew libit. Do you know it?
It was written by François Pinard and acheived a level of generality
that goes way beyond what autolib currently does. I think that adding
slightly some generality would not complicate autolib, but would
simplify many other tools. For instance, autolib could become the
replacement of aclocal, but also of automake --add-missing, probably
libtoolize etc.
Have a look at
http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/~pinard/libit/libit-0.7.tar.gz, and try to
use it: you'll see it's a wonderful tool.
