But no maintainer should be using gzip 1.2.4 any more. It has serious
correctness and security bugs. Perhaps we can think of the current
build-time warning as a reminder that maintainers should upgrade.
I don't know of any software distribution that still ships gzip 1.2.4.
Fedora Core 3 and Solaris 10 ship 1.3.3. Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 ships
gzip 1.3.5.
It is a real problem that the gzip maintainer hasn't issued a new
official release for a dozen years, but that's a different matter. In
the mean time, maintainers should use an up-to-date version, even if
it's not "official".
