# Any assignment to VPATH causes Sun make to only execute
# the first set of double-colon rules, so remove it if not needed.
# If there is a colon in the path, we need to keep it.
if test "x$srcdir" = x.; then
  ac_vpsub='/^[         ]*VPATH[        ]*=[^:]*$/d'

According to the comment, the intention was to remove it when not
needed, i.e. when $srcdir = $builddir.

The mistaken assumption seems to be that the line in the is
always going to contain "@srcdir@", "$(srcdir)", or the like (a ":"
means @srcdir@ & one or more other dirs).

Why not check for that?

  ac_vpsub='/^[\t ]*VPATH[\t ]*=[\t ]*(@|\$\()srcdir(@|\))$/d'

Please excuse the non-portable '\t's - my mail reader won't send a real
