It's a stable GNU release. A Redhat distribution of Linux came with
an modified Autoconf with version number 2.14.1 - this helped destroy
the version numbering scheme since 2.14 has never been released. There
has been a tremendous amount of changes for the next Autoconf release
- kind of gives the feel of being halfway to Autoconf 3.0, so the
version number was set to 2.50 to indicate this, except that there is
no logic in making minor version numbers go to 100 before incrementing
the major. Anyways, this discussion belongs in the past - the number
is now decided on - which number doesn't really matter, as long as the
number increases.
