AFAIK, Autoconf 3 was not started yet.  (Obviously, most of the code will be 
inherited
from Autoconf 2.) Sorry if any of our mails gave you the false impression.

But I believe that Autoconf 3 will eventually matirialize.  (Perhaps we won't 
see it,
but our children surely will...  ;-)
