I'm talking about those files named $cache_file in my $CONFIG_SITE. Since they hold lines of the form: ac_cv_func_foo=${ac_cv_func_foo=yes} the cache is invalid if I remove the package containing libfoo.
Also, on a procedural note, when starting a new thread of discussion please send a new message. When you reply to an old thread such as you did by replying to "test in a m4 macro and variable created from pushdef" and then simply change the subject your message is threaded there and anyone who is not interested in that thread and have killed it will probably miss reading your message threaded there along with them.
