dist-target needs rule for target ChangeLog

I have an issue concerning the dist-target, I have the files needed by
autoconf, automake etc. (ChangeLog, AUTHORS, NEWS, README...) and I am
able to ./configure && make && make install from the root directory of
the project. Trying to get the package issuing make dist fails, I get
the error, that there is no rule for the target ChangeLog, needed by
"distdir". What i don't understand is, the file ChangeLog is already in
the root directory of the project. There should not be a rule needed for
ChangeLog, since it is already there...
Can anybody give me a hint?
