You could always create a file .tarball-version with desired contents as a
workaround to having a working git checkout.  But this is only for copied
tarballs, and not recommended for a true git checkout (since you lose the
automatic versioning otherwise provided by git-version-gen when the
.tarball-version file is intentionally not present).
