Two issues:

  - Right now, &version_check doesn't appear to support two-dot 
    versions: it will only grok 1.6-p1.

  - Richard's fix for &check_typo, allowing AC_SUBST's variables
    with reserved suffixes is quite important, but it's also an
    API breakage: if this went in 1.6.1, it would mean that a
    Makefile.am which works with 1.6.1 might not work with 1.6
    (although these two versions would be advertised as sharing
    the same API).
