Yes, I know about using '-x' in the bash invocation line -- but given all of the variable substitution (and duplicated code), '-x' was less helpful than you'd think; it's next to impossible to match up the display with the source code. However, lots of echo <lineno> PLUS '-x' was a pretty good thing. However, this is veering wildly offtopic, so let's take this "how to debug libtool itself" subthread (if there is one) offline...
