I have little experience with Automake python support, and as such,
can't really comment on this aspect.  But I'd like to point out the CVS
Autoconf macro AS_VERSION_COMPARE to compare version strings compatible
to glibc strverscmp.  It might be beneficial to take advantage of it if
this turns out to be possible (but I haven't really checked whether that
applies in your case :).
