Ping ping on this?

This seems like a simple and fairly uncontroversial change, so I'll
wait 48 hours, then I'll push it.  Obviously, before the push, I'll 
rebase it on maint, and test it (within reason) with Heirloom make and 
GNU make (3.81) on Debian, /usr/ccs/make and /usr/xpg4/make on Solaris 
10, and BSD make on FreeBSD.
