Mostly it's lack of time in general, and on my part also lack of proper
Fortran knowledge (sorry).  There is also one more issue though, a legal
one: your changes are by no means trivial, so I'm not sure "we" (i.e.,
automake developers and/or contributors) can safely take a look at them
until your paperwork with the FSF is in place.

Well, since you ask :-), the preferred patch format is that generated
with "git format-patch".  And providing also a ChangeLog entry in your
patch would be nice (even a rough draft can be good as a starting point;
it can be improved in later iterations without any fuss).

Thanks again for your work, and please don't be discouraged by our, erm,
suboptimal responsiveness.  I think the feature you are proposing would
be used and appreciated by many automake users, so it would be a pity to
let it wither.
