make distclean with subdirobjects

I'm seeing
subdir/.dirstamp
subdir/*.o

left in each subdir that has objects built in it after make distclean
when subdirobjects is in use (CVS HEAD, not updated for a few days now).
(where subdir is a particular dir). (I'm working on make distcheck
again, the pass seems to have been a lucky chance :[).

Is this a known bug? Am I doing something wrong?
