You can use EXTRA_PROGRAMS for this purpose. This will output
the rules needed to build the programs and distribute their
sources, but it won't automatically build the programs in `make
dist' nor install them during `make install'.
EXTRA_PROGRAMS = ex1 ex2
ex1_SOURCES = ex1.cpp
ex2_SOURCES = ex2.cpp
check-examples: $(EXTRA_PROGRAMS)
