This is documented. It is described in the standard generic INSTALL file that Automake provides. It is quite common for packages to simply include the default INSTALL file.
* I've got a feeling it's going to reach less potential backtrace reporters / occasional bug fixers than --enable-debug (I personally don't try to debug a tool if I can't debug at the source level in a half an hour). So, I would also like to know the way to do that.
The answer is compiler-dependent since each compiler provides different command-line options to enable debug.
