Huh. That probably means the example in the manual is broken too.
Anyway, the solution is straightforward. Rules in Makefile.am only
override Automake-supplied rules if they are spelled _exactly_ the same
way. So you just need to change the spelling in the rule, usually by
using a variable like:
test_stop_log = test-stop.log
$(test_stop_log): blah blah blah
and the Automake-generated rule for test-stop.log should be emitted
normally.
