Is this a run-time or a compile-time switch?

Technically it's a *configuration* switch (as I mentioned above). The configuration step happens before the compile step. It's definitely not a run-time switch.

If compile-time, just make your choice, and inform those like me who work
less hard on the maintenance of these tools as to how to rework the tool to
make it comfortable to our individual taste.
Sure, I just need help in figuring out which choice to make. :-)

Or possibly (ugg), just
include two make executables.
