Sorry for the late reply, been suffering from a dodgy internet
connection in the last 48 hours. Broadband might be cheap nowadays, but
the service is cheap too, reliability wise... I guess you get what you
pay for...

Thanks for suggesting Minicom and Kermit.  I downloaded and installed
both of them, but as I feared the man page for either of them is several
miles long. I am searching for HowTo's on the net to have a quick step
by step procedure to configure them as simple serial terminal, but in
the meantime, or if I fail to find anything relevant on the net, if
someone could send me practical instructions (off-list, so as to keep
traffic low on here) on how to setup minicom and/or kermit, so I am up
and running asap, that would be truly great... :-)
