[avr-gcc-list] Use of external RAM

I am new to GCC in general, and also to the AVR line, so please forgive
a simple question...

Are there any special steps to use external RAM with the compiler?

I know about setting the SRE and SRW bits in MCUCR via a hook to the reset 
vector,
but I was wondering if there is anything that needs to be done to tell the 
compiler / runtime
library / linker about te extra RAM not built into the CPU. This would be with 
an 8515, mega103, 
or mega161.
