[avr-gcc-list] mega8 usart

is there a way to use the mega8 usart in synchronous mode without any start
or stop bits? I need to transfer 16 bits to a dac. The spi port is occupied
by a nonstandard device that only allows itself to be on the spi bus without
any other devices.

also, how about overclocking the mega8-16 to run at 16.384MHz ? Is that
reliable?
