No, this is not correct. A few years ago when the avr gcc port was starting to take shape the ava assembler was used http://medo.fov.uni-mb.si/mapp/uTools/ but never Atmel's assembler, it wasn't up to the task (and still isn't?) Not to mention the lack of support and source code.

Once the GNU binutils AVR port was done (more hard work by Denis) the GNU assembler was then used. Look at the gas (GNU assember) documentation as suggested by some earlier posts.
