A shot in the dark: Did you download the "Shells" tree in 
Cygwin? Perhaps that will get the missing stuff you need to 
build avarice. I know it can be done; Colin O'Flynn 
(hello?) on this list has built it. Also, be sure to check 
out the latest CVS. I seem to remember there has been a 
recent commit for Cygwin.
