I assume that AVR studio cannot display typedef'd structs. I've never seen
it work.

Does it make any difference if you use tagged structures?
typedef struct test {
uint8_t a;
uint16_t b;
uint8_t c[10];
} test;
or avoid typedefs altogether?
struct test {
uint8_t a;
uint16_t b;
uint8_t c[10];
};
...
struct test d[3];
