Adding all that together, it seemes to me there might be some marginal
(sometimes too short) timing value used while the circuit is put to
programming mode using stk200 (both in uisp and avrdude) - something
like 'wait for vcc'.
I would try to simply make all stk200 related timing constants in uisp
twice as large and retry (if it works, you can find the right
constant).
