You don't provide enough information.
1. You don't explain how it doesn't work.
2. You don't provide how xyz and crc are defined.
3. You don't provide your version of the tools: binutils, gcc, avr-libc

and you didn't say whether you checked the gcc bug database to see if 
something like this has been reported before.
