Never mind... I dug (shallowly) into the archives, and quickly found a note
to check the power supply. The jtag device ships without a jumper to enable
powering itself from USB. What's odd now is not that it had intermittent
problems, but that it worked at all. Without the jumper, it draws its power
from the target board, in this case the Butterfly. The Butterfly ships
without R402, a 0R jumper that connects its power to the JTAG port. Very odd
that it should work at all unpowered.

thinking to play around with the Butterfly. AVR Studio 4.12 has trouble
connecting to it, and once connected, often drops the connection. Avarice
doesn't see the device at all. Sometimes, forcing a reset on the Butterfly
