At first sight it looked promising, but when I tested code around avr-gcc's PR45263 for ATmega256* it did not work and I thought my patch was incorrect. avrtest passed the test.
The big drawback of avr-dgb build-in sim is that there's not a word about what it can do and what it can't do.
Presumably it's just a core simulator that does not care for RAMP*, EIND and has less capabilities than simulavr. But I found no information on the simulator and no hint if it's from scratch or originates in some other sim.
