I just applied the attached patch. This is a rather large (and very
welcome!) distribution from Dmitry Xmelkov [pronounce the `X' as `kh',
it's meant to be the Cyrillic letter `Kha'], which not only fixes bugs
but also improves the overall performance of both functions.

I've also fixed a few minor documentation issues. Someone here in a
German web forum noticed that the avr-libc documentation recommended
fairly outdated versions of the GNU tools, so I've completely dropped
any version recommendation. Someone else got confused about the
missing UART initialization in my FAQ entry for printing ROM-based
strings, so I added a hint.

Now, I think

[bugs #11714] EEAR problem with atmega48 in io.h

is the one remaining problem to be solved before 1.2.1 can be rolled.

Eric, you seem to be more acquainted to the new AVR devices than me,
if you get a chance, I wouldn't mind if you handled that item. ;-) If
you don't have a chance to quickly say ``Yes, applicable'', or ``No,
this is not an issue at all'', I'll probably look at it tonight
(European time).

If anybody were about browsing the documentation for other minor
issues, I'de be glad. There might be more hidden gotchas like those
mentioned above.

Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-)
