I think our systems at work are running (moderately recent) 2.6.x
kernel versions.

No, the libusb/FreeBSD issue is different.  The FreeBSD USB
implementation offers an option to accept partial replies (less than
requested), and libusb really should set this option but doesn't by
default (at least it didn't in version 1.10a, haven't looked at the
recent versions).

Just checked 1.12, it's fixed there.
