Follow-up Comment #1, bug #18529 (project avrdude):
I suppose the problem is not directly an error in the AVRDUDE part. It seems
that something with hardware, firmware, kernel or lib-usb goes wrong. Does
this timeout also occur with older firmware versions like usbasp.2005-11-14?
There were some reports that long usb cable cause read or write failures.
Perhaps you can test it with a short usb cable!
