Bill,
Another partially-implemented feature that will minimize the work
done and accomplish your goal is the "PART=" mechanism.
You will eventually be able to type:
make PART=graphics
and only the graphics will be rebuilt. This mechanism used to
exist and I have not yet recovered it.
