but clef exists as we can see from your message

it appears that your $AXIOM shell variable contained a trailing slash

When I look at your second message I see:

Here the contents of /usr/bin/xiom

>  AXIOM=/usr/axiom/mnt/
>  export AXIOM

so if you remove the trailing slash from the AXIOM variable all
should work properly.
