Here is a patch for it.  I suppresed the patch for any version of GCL
greater than 2.6.7.  Should I be more aggressive than that?

Tim --

I nominate this patch for the gold branch.  In the long run, I believe
we should not construct a ghetto carefully delimitated by myriad of
local patches.
