In short, it's the linux kernel ported to run as a normal windows process.
Because of the SAGE notebook, which provides the UI and graphics for SAGE,
the colinux approach works well.  Without that, it would be painful to use
for anything involving graphics.

How much space is left.  For SAGE, we'd need about 300MB, probably,
since we would want to include GCC.
