| How is the g... stuff suppoed to work? All of my systems
| have just 'tar' and 'awk'.

Some systems have gtar, some don't.  Just like some have gawk instead
of awk (or nawk, or...).  The differences should not matter for our
purpose -- and if they do, then we have a bug.
