Is replacing an alist by a repeat of cons in the type specification
really "crippling"?  No functionality is lost by that as far as I can
see, it is just somewhat less convenient to do.

I can understand that you find better things to do than going
overboard with XEmacs backward compatibility, but if no technical
reasons exist, maybe some XEmacs user would volunteer to do the
changes.
