I just recently removed a bug where "LaTeX found no preview images"
made other, more important error messages disappear.

So it might be an idea to try with one of the nightly development
snapshots of AUCTeX in order to get a better error message.

Alternatively, you can try to outcomment the "LaTeX found no preview
images" error call in preview.el, but then it will not even occur when
it should.

With all files _except_ circ.tex?

Ok, then we seem to have a more interesting problem here. Possible
differences are:

a) circ.tex might have a different encoding (line endings and basic
encoding)
b) circ.tex explicitly calls preview.sty with fixed options. If you
have nonsensical options in preview-default-option-list or similar
variables, then circ.tex would not use them, but most of your files
would.

Try reporting your problem with
M-x preview-report-bug RET

which will list a lot of details about your system, and maybe also
include an example file of yours. Change the bug reporting address to
the bug-auctex list before sending. While not stritcly necessary, it
saves moderation hassles.
