I guess it has been introduced in a recent version of pdfTeX. I'm using
pdfeTeX 3.141592-1.30.2-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.5), which at least contains the
string in question:

% strings pdftex | grep "PNG copy"
 (PNG copy)

When using pdftex 1.10b, however, I get the same output as you.
