am not the only developer of AUCTeX.

You still need to load auctex, like described in INSTALL (unless this
is done by gentoo's package itself).

Hopefully by deleting tex-site.elc.

Sigh.  The INSTALL file and its instructions are there for a reason.

If that happens only with AUCTeX, it is likely something related to
the font locking.  I have no expertise in that area.  Anybody else?
