AUCTeX prepends "pdf" to the LaTeX command when TeX PDF mode is enabled.
Thus, you cannot use the whole path to the executable.
A solution would be to add /usr/texbin to the PATH environment variable
or whatever your OS uses to make executables available. There is also a
way to make them available for Emacs only, see e.g.
(info "(emacs)Environment").
