OK, it seems that the problem is in here.  I don't have time right now
to imagine the failure, but I keep this handy and will probably come
back to you to try to understand what happens and what at-stderr
contains here.  In fact, it'd be great if you could insert at this
place a `cp at-stder1 er1; cp at-stdere err' and tell us what er1 and
err contain.  We probably get some shell tracing information that
should have been removed, but is not.
