I never proposed to change the code expanded from the macro.
(I just wanted to move a few lines from one macro to another.)

Yes, but the way it uses AS_TMPDIR is broken.  We can either go for
a simple straightforward implementation, which can be slow on non-GNU
systems with fast /tmp (eg. Solaris), or for a rather complicated
correct tmp dir handling.

I suggest that I try to submit the former solution, you'll test it and
show us how slow it really is, and I'll implement the later one then.
