I'd guess that this is a bug in Automake, and that you should simply
upgrade. 1.4 is pretty old (circa 1999). I don't offhand know which
Automake version Autoconf is supposed to depend on, but I suggest
simply upgrading to the latest version of Automake (1.9.6).
